Multiple Babydoll Registries
Or the comment: "I wish there was just one registry"
Guess what? We agree.
Why is there not one registry for Babydolls? The short answer is breed standards and business practices that vary.
For nearly two decades (1980's when Robert Mock started to re-establish the breed through to the early 2000's) there was one Babydoll Southdown sheep breed registry. Then, some breeders thought they would prefer a different look/ standard for the Babydoll breed and also that a business for Babydolls would be better managed as an organization rather than by an individual/ family. So the 2nd registry was created.
Those steadfast in their dedication to the original registry and Babydoll Southdown breed standard were put in a lurch several years ago when the original registry was not communicating with paying members. Then, the first registry was sold - symbolically (and in some cases physically) losing the connection to the history it originally represented.
When these changes happened, a number of "OG registry" breeders didn’t want to join the 2nd registry (or couldn’t if they had purebred spotted Babydoll Southdown sheep)... so yet another registry option was needed.
Babydoll Sheep Registry Association would absolutely love to see one streamlined registry for the Babydoll Southdown breed - a not-for-profit organization that upholds the original registry’s breed standard based on Robert Mock’s research into the breed's history and his wishes/ intentions for the future of the breed. So, that is our goal. Babydoll Sheep Registry Association is an organization/nonprofit that upholds the original registry’s breed standard and allowances to save the lineage/ purebred status of the Babydoll Southdown sheep.
In an effort to make things easier for breeders, Babydoll Sheep Registry Association does currently accept Babydoll Southdowns from either of the first two registry organizations - so long as the sheep match the shorter, stocky breed standard originally set in place.
